Another really good use for rock study is to look at which animals call rocks home.
All you need for this activity is an outdoor area with both sun and shade, four brick-sized rocks, a magnifying glass and a bit of patience.
Materials:
- Four brick-sized rocks (or bricks)
- Magnifying glass
- Notebook and pencil
Procedure:
1. Place two brick-sized rocks in a sunny area and two brick-sized rocks in a shady area.
2. Wait 24 hours and then gently lift each rock.
3. Study the creatures you observe with your magnifying glass.
4. Gently set the rocks down exactly as they were before.
Repeat this procedure once a day for a week, a month, or longer. What to do you notice or observe about the changes in living plants and animals over time?
