Writing and Nature Activity: Matching Color Samples in Nature

Category: Nature Curriculum, Word Play, Writing Exercises, Writing Life – Admin – 4:48 am

Sometimes a nature walk is all about color.

Here’s a simple activity to explore the depth and range of color. It’s an excellent way to improve your observation and discovery skills and a refreshing alternative to typical nature identification activities.

Go to any store that sells paint supplies and select a range of paint sample cards. Select several from each of the basic colors.

Take all from a given color range, green mid summer, for example, and see how many of the paint colors you can match to what you find in nature. Don’t limit yourself to plants. Look at bird feathers, water, turtle shells - or any other natural source of your color.

What does the paint store call the color? What would you name the color, based on where you see it?

Write about your discoveries - fiction or nonfiction - it’s your choice. Or perhaps you want to try the color writing exercise.
