Nature Projects: More Fun With Seeds

In addition to sprouting seeds in a jar or in shallow soil, save egg shells, orange or grapefruit halves to create decorative containers for fun decorations.

If you have lots of old seeds, save them for making pictures or jewelry.

I. Sprouted Seed Decorations:

Materials:

  • Egg shells, rinsed
  • Orange or grapefruit shells
  • Potting soil
  • Markers or paint pens
  • Seeds from list
  • Plant sprayer - light mist setting
  • Seed list:

  • Alfalfa
  • Mustard
  • Mung beans
  • Radish
  • Watercress

  • Procedure:

    1. Use markers or paint to make a face or  decoration* on egg shells or citrus peels
    2. Fill each shell with moist potting soil
    3. Put alfalfa seeds in one container, cress in another - one seed variety per container
    4. Use the plant sprayer to keep the soil moist
    5. In a few days your sprouts will grow
    If you made a face, it will look like your container has sprout “hair.”

    *Decorate your container like a porcupine or dinosaur growing sprout “quills” or “spikes.”
    Decorate your container with colors or shapes to complement the color or shape of sprouts.

    II. Dried Seed Art:

    Materials:

  • Posterboard, cardboard or stretched canvas
  • Craft glue
  • Grid paper and pencil for planning designs
  • Dried seeds
  • Dried Seed List:

  • Beans - any variety
  • Bird seed - any mixture
  • Corn
  • Flower seeds - wild or cultivated
  • Fruit seeds - any variety
  • Grass seeds
  • Tree seeds, including maple wings and acorns
  • Vegetable seeds - any variety
  • Procedure:
    1. Sort dry seeds by shape
    2. Use your grid and pencil to plan your design
    3. Arrange seeds to make a pattern or picture
    4. Glue seeds individually to your paper or canvas

    III. Seed Jewelry:

    Materials:

  • Apple seeds
  • Craft needle and thread
  • Paper and pencil for designs
  • Beadwork patterns
  • Procedure:
    1. Study beadwork patterns to get ideas for your designs
    2. Use your grid and pencil to plan your design
    3. Soak seeds for 10-15 minutes before you begin
