Nature Game: Popping Jewelweed Pods

Category: Flowers, Foraging, Hiking, Nature Curriculum, Survival – admin – 1:41 am

Jewelweed grows in moist woods and along stream banks.

Its distinct spurred yellow and orange blossoms make the plant easy to define in late summer. After the flowers bloom, the seed pods form.

This nature game is fun alone or in groups. The pods are also fun to eat.

When you find a swollen pod, pinch the bottom tip and watch the seeds explode. Notice how the swollen pod deflates and shrivels.

To create a big explosion, use a stick to gently stir the entire patch of jewelweed. As the pods burst, the seeds will fly around like popcorn in a hot air popper.

This is a fun diversion and it helps the jewelweed reproduce.
