How to Study Shadows

Category: Nature Curriculum, Trees – Admin – 5:54 am

Here is a simple way to study shadows and draw a picture.

All you need is a sunny day, a leaf and a marker and paper. This is another nature activity that is perfect for very young children.

Materials:

  • Large (18 x 24 inch) piece of poster board or large piece of paper
  • Marker or crayon
  • A single leaf - maple, oak, tulip tree or any leaf you find
  • A friend or helper

Procedure:
1. Place posterboard or paper on level ground in direct sunlight.
2. Have your helper hold the leaf so its shadow falls on the paper.
3. Trace the shadow with your marker or crayon.
4. Place your leaf next to the shadow. Is the leaf bigger, smaller or the same size as the shadow?
5. Try doing this activity once before noon, leave the paper in the same place and repeat in the afternoon?

How does the leaf compare in size to the morning shadow picture and the afternoon shadow picture?
