Nature Game: How to Make Acorn Cap Whistles

Category: Foraging, Nature Curriculum, Trees – Admin – 1:21 am

This nature game is a bit more challenging that making grass whistles.

It’s still a good way for one or more players to enjoy nature.

You Need:

  • One acorn cap - look near oak trees (a bottle cap is a good substitute)
  • Your two thumbs

How to Play:

1. Place your thumbs across the hollow side of the acorn cap
2. Position your thumbs so there is a V-shaped opening above them and a bit of the upper acorn cap edge is exposed
3. Blow into the base of this V

This make take practice and a bit of adjusting, but eventually you will hear a sound like a tea kettle whistling.

If you have access to different types of oak trees, try using different acorn caps. Can you hear a difference from one type of acorn to another? What about two that are the same species but different sizes?
