If you say this e. e. cummings poem out loud, it’s almost like hiking in mud season.

I invented rain-cycles, in honor of mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful. There’s something about the rhythm of hiking and singing or reciting poetry that makes me feel joyous.

The Writing Life: Writing is a Sensory Experience

Several years ago I asked a fifth-grade nature class, "How many senses do we have?"

A student’s hand shot up as he said, "Six."

We rely on our sense of sight for the bulk of our daily activities. We look, then sometimes listen. But we have the ability to touch, taste and smell. I agree with that fifth-grader, our intuitive sense (the "little voice inside’) is another way to experience our world.

Have you ever read something and become so involved that you felt the finger-numbing cold, the shudder of fear or the dry mouth?

Photographs in Changing Weather

Nature has been busy this week.

The lunar eclipse was beautiful. It was too cold to watch while holding a camera. The red-winged blackbird is back, but I was not fast enough with my camera.

This is what the sky looks like when flurries, warm sunlight and rain-sicles (my new word for freezing rain) alternate every 15 minutes.

Sustainable Technology in Our Backyard

I attended the Energizing Agriculture: Opportunities for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency on the Farm conference sponsored by the Town of Warwick hoping to meet a farmer raising grass-fed animals.

What I got was an eye-opening education at what the farmers in my own back yard are already doing to convert their farms to using sustainable agriculture techniques – many of them profitably and affordably.
