The Writing Life: Exercises to Fill the Blank Page

Category: Word Play, Writing Exercises – jj_murphy – 1:02 am

Three days of balmy weather has gone to my brain.

Here are a few thoughts to stimulate nature writing:

1. Think of the sunset from the sun’s point of view. Write a poem, an essay or whatever inspires you.

2. Write a poem with each line containing “I used to . . . but now I . . .”

3. Open a book, write down the first sentence you read and create a joke, a short story or any other written work that inspires you.

4. Find a favorite recipe. Rewrite the recipe as a poem, a song or a narrative.

5. Select a journal entry or rough draft of written work. Examine the sentence lengths and paragraph lengths. Then rewrite the piece to create a different tone or impact.

6. Freewrite for ten minutes on a topic that inspires your passion.
