Wildlife Sharing the Trail on a Spring Morning

Category: Hiking, Insects, Mammals, Reptiles – jj_murphy – 8:44 pm

The days are still getting longer, making it easier for animals to get around. Here’s who was out and about this morning:

Porcupine Porcupine raised quills

This porcupine is aware I’m watching. Porcupines cannot “throw” their quills. Quills penetrate the skin of animals that touch them.

Rabbit

This rabbit has plenty of young greens to nibble.

Black Snake Closeup of snake face

Black snakes are beneficial. This one has found a sunny spot to warm up. The vibrations of my step on the trail got the snake’s attention.

Black Vulture nest

Look carefully through the leaves and you can see the black vulture’s twiggy nest. There are two chicks, but this nest is strategically placed to keep predators, including humans, from getting too close.

Black vulture parent

No doubt this watchful bird is one of the parents.

Black butterfly Butterfly

I’m not a butterfly expert, so I have to research who these beautiful creatures are.
