One Laptop Per Child: Using Laptops Off the Grid

Category: Internet, Writing Life – jj_murphy – 5:23 pm

When I started this business almost two years ago, my goal was to be able to be out in the woods while writing and working. My budget does not include finances for a hard-wired computer, like those used by our military.

My woods time is spent writing with pen or pencil and paper and transcribing my written work to the computer. I do work at my computer, but need to swim the butterfly strokes in order to be able to move my arms and shoulders freely.

So, when I heard about Nicholas Negroponte and his One Laptop Per Child program, I was inspired by his dream to ensure every child in remote third world countries has access to a computer.

I’d happily buy as many computers as I could for what I spent on my laptop to empower children in third world countries. I phoned the company and got put on their mailing list. There may be an opportunity to take one of these laptops into the woods and write the way I’d hoped to back in November 2005. I have enough energy to recharge my battery by cranking a wheel.

Meanwhile, I’m checking out OLPC’s site for more details.

I’m hopeful for this project on many levels. Not only for the people it will empower, but for the opportunity to do the two things I love in one setting.
