How Evergreen Trees Survive Winter

Category: Trees – jj_murphy – 5:46 am

I was reading my survival skill class notes. I haven’t looked at these in a number of years.

I’m impressed with the complete explanations and careful drawings. I just modified my pine needle tea recipe. The needles nearer the trunk are higher in Vitamin C than needles on outer branches.

Trees have been on my mind a lot lately. I spent years collecting evergreen carcasses, propping them up for birds to hide or peck at suet. I love the living Christmas tree idea. I hope it catches on.

Which gets me thinking about how evergreen trees - conifers, like spruce and pine as well as broad-leaf evergreens, like mountain laurels - survive the winter.

The leaves have a waxy texture, which helps them retain moisture. The plants also produce a chemical which acts like antifreeze.
