Pictures say more than words when it comes to winter giving way to spring in the Shawangunks. I hiked the recently saved ridge yesterday, lucky to enjoy the best weather we’ve had in weeks.
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara L) blooms and sends out leaves later.
Yup, that’s snow under the hemlocks. This photo was taken about 90 minutes after the coltsfoot photo was taken on April 10, 2008.
After a long climb, it felt good to poke my fingers in the granular snow.
Awosting Lake was sunny and warm, with just enough of a breeze to keep the bugs from biting.
I’m not sure if this is a kinglet or vireo nest. It was built last year and survived the winter in excellent shape. Truly a good shelter.
Movement caught my eye. I wasn’t even sure I caught this little bird, which may be a veery - I would have know for sure if it called or sang.
