I love this time of year. The days are still getting longer, the birds are still migrating, seeds and flowers are still emerging. It’s a hopeful time.
The wood thrush song is one of my favorite sounds in the world. It’s a gift to get a glimpse of this elusive deep woods denizen.
I was gifted a woodchuck. I’m getting really good at cleaning mammal skulls. I have a lot to learn about removing the membrane without damaging the hair follicle. Time is a factor.
I was also gifted two trout. I rarely get fresh whole fish. I have no trouble opening and gutting the fish. Removing the bones in trout is relatively easy, but it has been years since I had hands-on practice.
Add my garden duties to all this and I have enough to keep me busy physically and mentally for days on end.
Knowledge is important, but hands-on practice is essential. With the opportunities that have recently opened up, I should have no trouble refining my foraging and survival skills.
